To My Daughter on her Dedication Day

There is much in what a name can mean
A name can also be a prayer.
Like Abraham–father of a multitude.
or Sarah, a princess fair

Peter was a prayer for his faith not to falter
And Jesus, He saved us! for his name means deliverer
Our daughter’s name is a hope and a plea
A cry to the Lord, who has power and mercy

No Piper is not a boy’s name,
though we did name her after John–
Reformed pastor, theologian, author
and also a 64 year old man.

Piper is a prayer that she would see through the mist.
Take her pleasure in Jesus,
become a Christian Hedonist

Or as Pastor John puts it:

“In us, Christ is most glorified
When in Him, we are most satisfied”

or

“Delight yourself in the Lord,” as the Psalmist aspires
and he will give you your heart’s desires.”

Piper is a prayer that she would be
a child with the Spirit of his Majesty.
Gail, is short for Abigail and means “father’s joy”
She already is, with the smiles she employs.

Gail is an answered prayer for she has been a delight.
To her earthly father, even at two a.m at night.
She is the daughter we will always love
But we hope most of all:
She would be the joy of the Father above.
